I also turned away from alcohol (probably for good) a little over 2 years ago. I was one of those middle-aged women who had slowly slipped from light social drinking into a heavier, more dependent relationship with the stuff. I do go to AA meetings a few times a month, but still feel a little insincere calling myself an alcoholic, not because I am better than anyone else, but because alcohol was more a symptom than the cause of my crisis.
